The Gig of Being Human is Hard.

Therapy in Tarzana, CA

I've come to believe that people make far more sense than they realize.

Many people come to therapy convinced they're broken. Let's reverse-engineer this. More often, they're struggling with old wounds and unmet needs that trace back to a time when they were younger, smaller, and less-resourced—when their survival depended on how reliably their emotional and physical needs were met. There can be any number of reasons, often harmless, sometimes not, why that reliability may have been…well… unreliable. It was then that our younger selves had to figure out “who do I need to be” to get my needs met.  And that is where the adaptations entered the chat.

At the time, they were assets.

Somewhere along the way, many quietly became liabilities—getting in the way of the very things we long for now: safe communication, meaningful connection, a sense of belonging, security, self-esteem, and belief in what's possible.

I've found that when we begin to lay out the map and unfurl the blueprint—understanding these patterns from a place of curiosity and compassion instead of judgment—something shifts. We stop seeing ourselves as broken and begin seeing ourselves as human.
